Greetings! My name is Janelle and I have recently obtained licensure as a Canadian Certified Counsellor. Providing a comfortable environment that is free of judgement is immeasurably important to me and I treat all individuals with respect both in and outside of the therapeutic space. It is important to me that I am able to individualize my therapeutic approaches for all diversity of needs.

I am eager to help you grow through a skills-based and client-centred approach. I enjoy bringing mindfulness into my sessions, collaboratively structuring your journey with you. You can often catch me engaging in meditation and breathing exercises so suffice to say, I practice what I preach! I like to take some time getting to know your inner world, then use your knowledge and experience to guide a strengths-based approach to healing and connection through the therapeutic process. Although your past can be insightful, I will use it as a means to guide a present-focused approach. As I progress in my skill set, I am hoping to work towards using somatic practices and to become certified in teaching somatic-informed yoga as a means to mesh the mind-body connection. With this in mind, I am eager to explore diverse topics and gain broad experience so I have a robust toolkit to draw from when informing my counselling sessions.

You might have an inkling that holistic wellness is a passion of mine - and you are right! I believe that it’s important to view health as a whole-body concept that incorporates whatever aspects are meaningful to you, whether that be physical health, emotional, spiritual, mental wellness, or a combination of all of those factors. I am also passionate about finding ways to incorporate our natural world into the healing process because fresh air can’t help but give you a fresh perspective. Some counselling-specific interests of mine are skill-based and client-centred approaches, somatic therapy (EMDR, Hakomi, somatic experiencing), narrative therapy, and solutions-focused brief therapy.

My Journey to becoming a provisional psychologist consisted of a bachelors of science in psychology which focused on the neuronal mechanisms of the brain and how various life events can affect how mental wellness presents itself in an individual. This foundation led to a masters in counselling which focused on the intricacies of how our social, biological, and psychological world influence and shape our mental health. With this wealth of understanding I take an integrative approach which seeks to understand and manage how different aspects of our inner and outer experiences influence how we show up in our day to day lives.

In knowing that there are many layers to mental health, I focus my attention on interventions that have been shown to improve mental wellness such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 1), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I also employ modalities such as Psychodynamic therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Client-Centered Therapy and continue to add other necessary modalities based on client need. In addition, with my integrative approach I focus on the importance of sleep hygiene, nutrition, and body image as well as body positivity.

Prior to becoming a registered provisional psychologist I interned for a non-profit organization which focused on a variety of issues such as childhood abuse, gender identity, agoraphobia, addiction, and the houseless population. During this internship and other employment opportunities I also work with children who have challenges with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and behavioural nuances that may affect school or home life. This allowed me to start my journey as a trauma-informed therapist as it is important to ensure clients psychological safety while exploring the challenges that are faced. I also gained experience as a recruitment consultant which employs me to be able to understand challenges clients may face in their career, and their professional growth and lends a hand for clients who may feel stuck in their work life. These experiences have helped shape my holistic and empathetic approach. When I’m not in the office I enjoy long walks, pilates, hot yoga, which help me stay balanced and ready for my day!

Tapping into your inner wisdom awaits!
